Three hours. That's the number I keep coming back to, and I should tell you now, so it doesn't catch you by surprise later, that I'm going to come back to it once more before I'm done.

Here's why. I was at the bank Thursday, about the car — it needs a fan belt again, and I wanted to move some money around before I dealt with that — and the loan officer told me no over the phone before I even got there, flat, don't bother coming in. I went anyway, because you keep the appointment you made, and I sat across from her for three hours going through the paperwork, line by line. Is that a meeting about a loan? Or is it a meeting about a loan that had already been told no? I don't know how a man standing outside the door would tell the difference. What do you call three hours spent on something that, an hour before it started, somebody already said wasn't happening?

How many hours did our officials sit with Iran's delegation at that table, after the offer was turned down? Three. What did the president call it, when a reporter asked him about it? A very good meeting, a very productive meeting. What does the Secretary call it when a country keeps waiting, past all that, into the midterms, for a deal he says isn't there? Miscalculating. And what do you call the three hours somebody spends going over the terms of a deal that isn't there?

I've also got the letter the senators sent the Secretary about the reporter Iran is holding — sent, by their account, one day before that same meeting, not the day after. I don't know if the reporter came up in the room. I only know which one reached my desk first.

I was closing the notebook — the fan belt isn't going to fix itself, and neither am I — when I remembered one more thing, so forgive me for turning back at the door. The Secretary's word was miscalculating, for a country betting on a deal that, in his telling, doesn't exist. What I've got written down, from earlier that same week, same delegation, is a different number, and I'm sorry, I already gave it to you once. Three hours is what a hundred and eighty minutes comes to. Which one of them was miscalculating? I only know how long it took to sit there and find out — three hours.
