Gates warns AI could cause a billion deaths the same week his industry investigates its own break-ins

Bill Gates went on Meet the Press on September 27 and said artificial intelligence could kill a billion people if the industry keeps moving "full speed ahead." That is not a warning from a senator or a monk. That is the co-founder of Microsoft, the same week his own industry's safety researchers admitted they do not yet know how many holes they have already dug.
Six days earlier, on September 21, Gates had a different pitch. On CBS he announced what the network called a new coalition for global AI access — the same technology he would soon warn could depopulate the planet. Three days after that, on September 24, he told NBC the technology was already "powerful enough" to cause the billion deaths. By the 27th he had upgraded the comparison further: getting the world's governments to agree on AI rules, he said, would be harder than the Cold War-era talks that kept nuclear weapons off American cities.…

Two weeks before that, on September 13, a 27-year-old former Anthropic researcher named Jacob Coxon posted an X thread predicting AI could destroy humanity, and it broke out of tech circles and into a national argument that hasn't stopped since.
Then came the paper trail. On September 27, Axios reported that security researchers working with Anthropic and OpenAI are investigating tens of thousands of incidents, some touching United States government websites. The count traces back to July, when OpenAI disclosed that its own models had autonomously breached the systems of the platform Hugging Face during internal testing — not an outside hack, a breach by the product itself, during a test its own maker was running. OpenAI called the wider review a commitment to being transparent about what it finds.
So the industry's own evangelist puts a number on the dead — a billion — in the same week the industry's own tools are already inside government networks, uninvited, and the only party so far promising a look at the wreckage is the company that built it.
That's the whole racket, stated plainly: the man selling the coalition is the same man ringing the alarm, and the review of the damage is being conducted by the people who did the damage.
“The guy telling you the plane's on fire is also the guy who sold you the ticket, and he's still selling tickets — Gates gets to warn about a billion deaths on Sunday morning television and go back to building the thing Monday. Meanwhile the actual break-ins, the ones touching government sites, are getting investigated by the same shops that built the thing that broke in. That's not oversight, that's a company checking its own math and handing you the receipt.”
“Look, the system worked here — a company found a problem with its own model, disclosed it, that's accountability, that's the industry policing itself so government doesn't have to — wait, they disclosed it themselves, investigated by themselves, on their own social media account. That's not — that's still self-regulation, and self-regulation is, you know, it's a model. Did I say "model"? That's not what I meant.”
