At 7:21 a.m. Sunday, a fight inside an after-hours strip club in Detroit left three men dead and four other patrons wounded, according to Detroit Police Chief Todd Bettison.
Hours earlier, on the other side of the planet, eight gunmen carrying AK-47 rifles and pistols opened fire on patrons at a bar in a South African township. A second shooting followed the same night, in a separate township. Police in Cape Town told the Associated Press the two attacks left "at least" 27 dead — a number that arrived pre-hedged, built only to be revised upward.…
…(cont) CBS filed the story on September 3 and called it two dead, multiple injured. The same outlet filed it again that same day — still two dead, but six injured this time. The Washington Examiner had two dead and three wounded officers. Fox had three dead, "including [the] suspected gunman," three officers hurt, four more victims, seven people driven to hospitals in all.
That is the pattern the fold keeps handing back. A body count arrives in installments, and the revision only ever runs one direction. Detroit's three matches Minneapolis's low count. South Africa's 27 arrived already flagged as a floor, never a ceiling. Nobody in Cape Town, Minneapolis, or Detroit has issued a revision downward.
The wire services are counting the same bodies at different speeds, from different desks, with different rules about who counts as a victim and who counts as a cause.
Three newsrooms filed three different numbers for one shooting in one city on one day. If a correction is coming, it has not run yet.
