Have I asked you this yet — how many House Democrats voted, on September 15th, to keep the articles of impeachment off the floor? I already know the answer, but let me read it off the wire copy sitting on the seat of my car, right next to an invoice for a fan belt I still haven't gotten around to installing. Eighteen. Eighteen House Democrats voted alongside nearly every Republican in the chamber, 232 to 147, to table the impeachment articles Representative Al Green had filed against President Trump.

Now, this isn't the only impeachment paperwork that's been making the rounds this month, is it? A Republican congressman filed his own set against the defense secretary, over a war the Congressional Budget Office says has already cost the country close to $40 billion — and called that a conservative estimate. A senator who voted to confirm that same defense secretary has asked for his job twice since then. I mention it because the wire's been carrying it all month, and because a man can only have so many impeachment stories parked in his driveway before he starts asking which ones actually move.…

Representative Ro Khanna is on Meet the Press, telling Kristen Welker that a third impeachment of President Trump — should Democrats retake the House in November — would be, in his words, "setting a standard." That same Sunday, over the radio, Judiciary Chair Jim Jordan tells his own audience something from the other direction entirely: "They say they're not going to, but we know they will." Two men, one day, talking about a vote that, as of the fifteenth, the man's own party had already declined to hold.

Here's where I get stuck, and maybe you can help me with the arithmetic, because I've never trusted myself with dates. The vote to table those articles was the fifteenth. The word the wire put in the headline was "eschewing." Nader's own words, the ones printed underneath it, were different. Feeble. Weak. Cowardly.

You know what this reminds me of? My car. I've been meaning to get the brakes looked at for about two months now. Every time I think about it, I tell myself: next repair, next paycheck, once I've got the money together I'll bring it in and do it right. And I believe myself when I say it — that's the part that gets me. It's not that I'm lying to myself. It's that "next time" is a place I keep promising to drive to while I'm still driving on what I've got today. The dog doesn't much care either way. He just wants to know if the car's moving.

So a man tells you he's setting a standard for a vote he'll take after he wins an election he hasn't won yet, on a floor his own eighteen colleagues just kept a similar vote off of two weeks before he said it. Is that a standard? Or is that a brake job scheduled for after the trip?

Oh — hold on, one more thing, before I forget, because it fell out of the folder onto the floor mat on my way out of the car. That Current Affairs piece Nader wrote — it cites a number too. Eighty-four percent of Democrats, according to the polling printed right there, already favor impeaching this president. Not after November. Now.

So is Khanna describing a standard he needs a new majority to go set? Or a standard eighty-four percent of his own party already wants set, that eighteen of his colleagues just voted, two weeks before he said any of this, to keep off the floor?

“They keep selling you the standard they'll set after they win, like the vote they'd need for it hasn't already happened. Eighteen of their own just tabled it on the fifteenth, and twelve days later the same party's telling Meet the Press the accountability's coming — next majority, not this one. Eighty-four percent of their own voters already want it done now; you're the one who gets told to wait for an election to get what a poll says you already voted for.”
