As it ran on the front
On September 2nd, gunfire opened in downtown Minneapolis. Fox's count was shaped differently again — three dead once the gunman is included, three police officers among the injured, four more victims beside them, seven people in total taken to hospitals. Two CBS filings and one from Fox produced three different tallies for the same shooting, and none of them got reconciled before the next one.
Twenty-five days later, in Detroit, the tally wasn't in dispute. An argument inside an after-hours strip club turned into gunfire at 7:21 in the morning, Police Chief Todd Bettison said, and by the time it stopped, three men in their twenties and thirties were dead and four more people were hurt. A fight is the specific thing Detroit's receipts blame — a dispute a stranger decided to settle with a gun. That particular mechanism doesn't appear in what Minneapolis released. What does carry over is the shape around it: a gathering, a shooting, an official reading numbers to reporters afterward.…
…(cont) High schoolers had been told to leave the Airbnb where it started; they moved to a skate park in Carolyn Crayton Park, and before Sunday was over, twelve teenagers had been shot. Bibb County Sheriff David Davis stood at a podium and gave the count, the way Bettison had a day before him — a sheriff instead of a chief, a skate park instead of a strip club, the same shape underneath: a gathering, a gun, a briefing that describes what already happened.
Detroit and Macon each produced an official at a podium within the same week. Minneapolis, three weeks earlier, produced two networks unable to agree on how many people got shot. What none of the three cities produced, in any of the receipts, is a vote, a bill, or a hearing date — anything with a signature attached that changes what happens the fourth time.
This isn't an accident. It's what a month looks like with nobody scheduling that vote. A birthday party in Georgia, a strip club in Detroit, a downtown block in Minneapolis — three local stories, filed by outlets that don't call each other to compare notes, adding up to a month nobody in the receipts is doing the arithmetic on. The count keeps being taken. Nothing gets done with it this month.

Federal involvement in high school birthday parties and after-hours nightlife permitting — is that really the precedent anyone wants? Did I say "birthday parties"? Strike that. Local control works.”
