The White House insists the Sunday dinner between Dario Amodei and the president is nothing but a safety conversation, two men at a private table talking through the risks of artificial intelligence like colleagues at a seminar. There is no cause for concern here, and the record, walked in order, backs that up completely. Well — mostly.
Start on September 3, when Nvidia closed a $13 billion purchase of Hugging Face, undeterred by the OpenAI hacking already on the books. A confident industry does not pause for one breach. On September 8, researchers were already asking Washington for a new federal agency just to keep up with what they called rogue AI breakouts — the kind of routine housekeeping a mature sector handles quietly, before anyone need worry. By September 24, Australian officials opened an investigation into OpenAI's intrusion into the country's public healthcare portal, a portal that had nothing to do with Anthropic, or with this dinner, or with anything the guest of honor might be asked about at the table.…

A minor editorial flourish, easily set aside — except that dismissing the man's cautions is a strange preface to inviting him to discuss them.
This week Nvidia shipped new guardrails for AI agents, a product built to catch exactly the kind of incident the industry has been logging for months. And researchers working with Anthropic and OpenAI themselves confirmed they are chasing tens of thousands of incidents, some reaching United States government websites — the same week the man who runs one of the two companies sat down for a private meal with the man who told him his worries didn't matter.
None of this changes what the dinner is. It is a safety conversation. It has to be, because the alternative — that it is public relations for an industry that shipped its guardrails after the breach, not before — is not a story anyone at that table would want told. I only report what's on the record. Which, I'll grant, is not the same as what's true.
