President rejects Iran's offer to end the war; Saudi Arabia's top diplomat meets Rubio, not the press corps.

The war hit its seven-month mark this week, the kind of count that starts to feel like an odometer nobody remembered to reset. On September 27th, the president rejected the offer Iran had put on the table: seven days, reopen the Strait of Hormuz, sit down and talk about ending it. He told Axios he still expects talks to resume, with neither side moving off what it's demanding. Reject the offer, then predict the outcome you just rejected — that's the whole move.

Four days before that rejection, on September 23rd, a bipartisan group of senators wrote Secretary Rubio pressing him to secure the release of Reza Valizadeh, a dual citizen and journalist held in Iran. The letter went out one day before American officials sat down, indirectly, with an Iranian delegation at the UN.…

…(cont) Two days later, September 25th, military chiefs from Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Pakistan scheduled urgent talks of their own, to firm up the Mecca Joint Defence Agreement, following a Thursday meeting in New York among the three countries' foreign ministers — Saudi Arabia's Faisal bin Farhan among them.

Today, Iran's government says the choice between war and diplomacy sits entirely with the president now — his move, his offer to reject or take. The same day, Faisal bin Farhan landed in Washington to sit down with Rubio. The dispatch that logged his arrival ran under a rolling Iran live-blog, and still described the meeting itself, in its own sentence, only as talks with Rubio — Iran didn't make it into that clause. The reporters trying to get a question to either man about any of it watched from outside the room.

This isn't a new arrangement. In November 2020, the Saturday before Prime Minister Netanyahu's secret flight to Neom to meet Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman was even reported, Faisal bin Farhan — the same man now in Washington — stood up and repeated Riyadh's eighteen-year-old peace initiative: normalization, after Palestinian statehood. The flight happened the next day. Saudi Arabia denied it took place. Benny Gantz called the leak of it "an irresponsible move."

Go back one more year, to May 2019: Iran's foreign minister was answering Trump's "genocidal taunts" in public while taking a shot at Saudi Arabia's foreign minister in the same breath. Same three capitals, same quiet errands, different year. What changes isn't the pattern. It's who's allowed in the room to watch it happen.

The Saudi visit is completely unrelated, Rubio has lots of meetings, it's a scheduling coincidence, that's — okay, it's probably related. But you cannot prove there's a pattern just because the same foreign minister keeps turning up whenever something's happening in the region.”
