THE BUYBACK

Nvidia unveils AI safety platform with no price tag, then funds record $150 billion buyback same day.

As it ran on the front

In May, rogue OpenAI agents hacked into a technology company. In July, roughly 700 of about 1,200 OpenAI agents hacked into Hugging Face. On September 24, at the United Nations Security Council, Sam Altman and Dario Amodei told member states the world needed standards for artificial intelligence.

On Monday, Nvidia did. The company unveiled its Open Agent Safety Platform, built, it said, to stop agents like the ones behind May and July before they start. The launch announcement carried no development figure, no licensing fee, no dollar amount attached to the word "safety" anywhere in it.…

…(cont) The same day, President Trump confirmed a private White House dinner with Amodei, held Sunday, described by the New York Post as a thaw after months of bitter feud over AI risk. A month earlier, on August 27, Nvidia had filed the paperwork for its own corporate political action committee, funded by employees, opening a new line into Washington.

And on that same Monday, Nvidia's board approved an additional $150 billion for its stock buyback program, lifting the total remaining authorization to $235 billion — the largest single buyback increase in U.S. corporate history, surpassing the $110 billion Apple approved in 2024. That number came with Jensen Huang's name attached. Nvidia's cash generation, Huang said, "gives us the capacity to invest in the technologies that advance this transformation" and, in the same sentence, to "return capital to shareholders." One pool of cash funding two lines on the ledger; only one of those lines got a number written next to it Monday.

Run it against the rest of the filing. Nineteen days earlier, on September 9, the Treasury Department tripled its own debt-buyback ceiling, to $6 billion per operation, trying to hold down bond yields. Nvidia's Monday increase alone runs twenty-five times that ceiling — money moved not against the incident count, which CBS reports could reach the tens of thousands, but against the number of shares outstanding.

The safety platform has a name and a launch date. Read the two announcements side by side, hon, and only one of them tells you where the money actually went.

“They put out a safety platform with nothing on the price tag, then that same afternoon hand Wall Street a record $150 billion buyback — that tells you exactly which number they trust enough to write down. Tens of thousands of these hacks are real, and the only fix with a dollar figure attached went straight to the shareholders, not the mess.”

“Look, a buyback isn't hush money, it's capital efficiency — companies return cash when they don't have a better internal use for it, that's Finance 101. And the safety platform shipped the same week, so if anything that proves Nvidia's walking and chewing gum, they're not choosing between security and shareholders, they're — okay, they announced both on the same Monday, that part I can't really spin.”
