GoFundMe demanded proof for a cancer fundraiser; the Iran war added $1,200 to family bills with none.

The money desk keeps two ledgers this week: what families get billed, and what gets checked before the check clears.

Start with what already ran on this page. The administration weighed a wider war against Iran after a U.N. inquiry called the strikes already conducted likely war crimes. The Congressional Budget Office priced the war at nearly $40 billion on September 15 and called that estimate conservative. A senator who voted to confirm the defense secretary has called for his firing twice this month. A Republican congressman has filed impeachment paperwork. None of that paperwork asked for a number broken down by household. It asked for a resignation.…

…(cont) On September 28, the Daily Caller asked whether rising borrowing costs on adjustable-rate mortgages and home equity lines of credit sound familiar. The piece does not say the war put a name to that rise. It asks the question and leaves the arithmetic to the reader: $1,200 a household, over six months, and Americans now reaching for the kind of mortgage that resets against them.

Eight days before that, on September 20, Jacobin filed a smaller version of the same account: Americans had started opening GoFundMe pages to cover groceries, on a platform once used mainly for hospital bills.

Then, on September 28, the platform ran its own audit. Donald and Josephine Johnson of Texas had a fundraiser running after he went viral hauling luggage to help cover her cancer bills. GoFundMe pulled it down. Not over the bills — the couple's account of those stood. GoFundMe told NBC News and the Hill the problem was "factual misrepresentations" tied to her identity, not her parents' story. A wife's identity got checked against a fundraiser page with more line-item diligence than a $40 billion war got checked against a budget.

Price the two gaps side by side, hon. A household absorbed $1,200 over six months that arrived with no itemized bill attached. A fundraiser for a dying woman's cancer care got pulled over an identity line that did get itemized, and checked, and enforced. The paperwork moves fast toward the family's page and slow toward the war's invoice.
