Food bank wins 270,000 eggs from price-fixing settlement, loses them to the price of diesel.

The line was farmers first, and last edition it held for one column. Walk forward from there.
On September 9th, North Carolina's attorney general settled an antitrust case against three of the country's largest egg producers, and Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina in Charlotte took delivery of 270,000 eggs, after food banks in Raleigh and Winston-Salem got theirs the month before. Call it real relief, because it was.…
…(cont) Six days later the Congressional Budget Office closed its books on the Iran war at $38 billion and called that figure conservative. That word already spent one column landing on farmers at the pump. The war entered its seventh month with the feed store still the ledger where they paid it.
On September 21st, an NBC News poll found 55 percent of voters say the president's policies have made the economy worse, and 26 percent say the opposite. I would call that a healthy split of opinion if it weren't a split over who still has money left after the pump — I withdraw healthy. Fifty-five is not healthy. Fifty-five is most of the country.
That is where this week's report on food banks lands, and it does not land somewhere new. Families are showing up who were not showing up before, because the gasoline it takes to reach the grocery store now competes with what is left to spend inside it. Call this a temporary supply adjustment, resolving itself the way markets do — the war has run seven months and diesel has not come down in that time, and I will not call seven months temporary.
The eggs from Charlotte were free. The trucks that would carry them somewhere else are not. The food bank that received a settlement in September is still paying for a war in September, and the number the Budget Office called conservative is the same number arriving at its loading dock.
“They tell you an egg settlement is charity and a war cost is patriotism, but it's the same racket: one hand fines the price-fixers a truckload of eggs, the other hand's fuel bill eats the truck. The families showing up at the food bank are paying twice, once at the pump and once in the grocery aisle, for a war the budget office already called expensive before anyone stopped counting.”
“Thirty-eight billion is what, a rounding — no, I already used that line last time and got corrected on it, forget I said rounding. The point stands: the war is priced, it is accounted for, it is under control, and if food banks are running short that's a charitable-giving problem, not a — did I just call a war cost a charitable-giving problem? That's not landing the way I wanted it to.”
