Pete Hegseth wants you to know the Pentagon is watching out for you. On Monday the man now titled War Secretary released a memo, reported by the Washington Examiner, instructing Cyber Command and the Combat Support Agencies to "prioritize" the deployment of "advanced intelligence and cyber capabilities" against threats to the 2026 midterms.
That is the whole pitch, and on its face it is not hard to defend. Foreign interference is a real thing, cyber capability is a real capability, and nobody here is going to carry water for a hostile intelligence service running an influence operation on an American election. The mission statement holds up fine. It's the — actually, hold on. "Maintaining the fundamental freedoms" is carrying a lot of weight for an operation whose actual target is still officially "any threat," which is not a country. It's an adjective.…
…(cont) Because the machinery for this was not built on Monday. On September 24 the Federalist reported the administration's "Election Infrastructure Security Plan," a blueprint of tools and services already sitting with election officials, in place before Hegseth's memo ever went out. The capability existed first. The memo just gave it a mission statement.
And two days before that, on September 22, The Intercept found the people actually doing election defense on the ground, and they are not cyber officers. They are volunteers who spent the last year training to watch ICE agents, now retraining to watch polling places, because they are bracing for the administration itself to disrupt the vote. Not a server farm overseas. Not a foreign ministry. The same administration whose War Secretary just wrote the memo about foreign threats.
So the equipment is real, the memo is real, and the mission is to defend democracy from foreign actors — and also, it turns out, from the people who are supposed to be running the election, which is — that's not what I meant to say. Strike that. The Pentagon is protecting the midterms. Ask from whom later.
