California's only governor debate ships as slogan, slur, and website before anyone votes

As it ran on the front
California's only scheduled debate for governor almost didn't happen. On September 8, Xavier Becerra, a Democrat, finally agreed to share a stage with Steve Hilton, the Republican and former Fox News host, after weeks of accusations that the frontrunner was ducking him. That standoff was the whole campaign in miniature: one man chasing a microphone, the other deciding whether to show up.
No hearing, no subpoena in that story — just a request that federal agents take another look, delivered to a newspaper instead of a prosecutor.…
…(cont) By Wednesday night the debate itself arrived, hosted by CNN, the only one either campaign had scheduled. The candidates spent an hour on Trump, taxes, immigration, healthcare, and how California should regulate artificial intelligence. The Guardian called it testy. Inside that same hour, Hilton returned to the scheduling fight from three weeks before and gave it a new shape: Becerra, he said, wasn't just late to the stage, he was taking voters for granted, not actively campaigning for a job he's favored to win.
None of that was the headline. Hours before the debate, the New York Post reported that Hilton had taken a reported White House insult — "B— ass Becerra" — and built it into a campaign website. The nickname arrived before the opening question did. By the time the two men were trading lines about tax policy on CNN, the site was already live, which meant the debate had competition it couldn't win: a slur travels faster than a tax plan, every time it's tried.
Then came the number nobody campaigned on. A poll in late September found Hilton trailing comfortably — and found voters don't especially like the man who's winning either. That's not a horse race. That's an electorate handed two names and shrugging at both, a month before anyone marks a ballot.
Put the pieces in order: a candidate who had to be talked into debating, an opponent who asked the FBI to look at him again, a nickname with its own domain name, and a poll that found the winner isn't well liked. Somewhere in there is an actual governor's race. It just isn't what got covered.
“They spent an hour of airtime on Trump and taxes and regulating AI, and the thing that's live on the internet right now is a website built off a slur. That tells you which one the campaign actually thinks works. Nobody's polling on the AI answer; they're polling on who you hate less, and both numbers came back ugly.”
“The debate proves Hilton is winning the argument even while trailing in the polls — did I say trailing? He's closing fast, that's the headline. The website's just red meat for the base, every campaign does opposition research, this one just comes with a domain name.”
