“Is James Talarico about to flip Texas for the Democrats?”, 2 October 2026 (Photo via The Guardian — the original report)
As it ran on the front
The filing is dated Sept. 25: Sen. Chuck Schumer launches a new PAC, Texas Forever, affiliated with his Senate Majority PAC, built to help James Talarico close out a Texas Senate seat Republicans have held since Reagan was governor of California. Running the filing against the table: ten days earlier, on Sept. 15, Talarico's lead over Ken Paxton stood at three points, a Telemundo/Mason-Dixon poll of likely voters. That's the number on the books before the PAC's name hit a single filing cabinet.
Two days after the filing, on Sept. 27, the lead reads five points - a Texas Public Opinion Research poll, 1,007 likely voters, margin of error 3.6. Five days after that reading, on Oct. 2, a Fox News poll for The Hill puts the lead at two - inside that poll's own margin of error. Seven days, filing to table: the lead rose two points and fell three. Net since the PAC's first day on paper: the lead is one point lower than it was before Texas Forever existed.…
…(cont) Reconcile that against the plain language of the Sept. 25 item: a committee "aimed at helping" the nominee's "bid to flip" the seat. The help, so far, nets negative. That's not an accusation; it's the arithmetic the three polls hand you when you lay them end to end.
The PAC's filing says what it's for. It does not say what it bought: which media markets, which weeks, which ad buys. Until that itemized list surfaces, the only entry anyone outside the committee can check is the poll, and the poll's gone the wrong way since the money arrived.
None of this means Talarico loses in November; two points is still a lead, and margins of error cut both directions. It means that whatever Texas Forever is paying for, five polling points of it evaporated in the same week the committee opened its doors, hon. The result that record was supposed to produce is not.

“Schumer's outfit shows up with a brand-new PAC, and the lead goes from three to five to two in a week — somebody's getting paid no matter which way that number moves. Follow the receipts: the committee doesn't have to win, it just has to spend, and spending doesn't come with a refund policy. If the itemized list never shows up, nobody outside that building ever finds out what the money actually bought.”
“Look, Texas Forever can print all the direct mail it wants, but Texas voters know out-of-state money when they see it — that's why the lead's cutting in half, not because of anything on our side. Schumer's own PAC is practically doing Ken Paxton's advertising for him at this point. Did I say that? That's not something I'd want repeated.”
Democratic Senate nominee James Talarico is surprising everyone, as polls have him leading his Republican opponent, Ken Paxton, in the Republican-led state of Texas. Jonathan Freedland speaks to James Henson, founder and executive director of the Texas Politics Project, about why a blue wave in the Lone Star state would be seismic…
Texas state Rep. James Talarico (D) is leading state Attorney General Ken Paxton (R) by just 2 points among likely voters, according to a new Fox News poll. The Democrat’s lead is within the poll’s 3-point margin of error and shows a tight race in the Lone Star State.
