Trump demands G7 drain 100 million barrels of reserves to fix diesel crisis his war on Iran caused.

As it ran on the front

Today we are making an emergency release, which is not a dish you can get over here, so I shall go slowly. You will need a war, a price spike, seven countries who call themselves the G7, and a stockpile each keeps against its own bad day.

Begin with the heat. On 4 September the average American diesel price hit $5.85 a gallon, an all-time high, and the economist Dean Baker wrote, on social media, "Trump did it! Diesel hits a new record high!" The war in Iran was already in the pan.…

The Poet The heat. I am drafting a sonnet about heat, about the pan, about everything that rises before anyone has paid for it.

The Punk Nothing in this house rises except the damp. I will put the pan through the wall before I sit through a sonnet about it.

By 22 September, with rural Republicans in close races pressing him for relief weeks ahead of the November elections, President Trump said he had called for a ban on diesel exports: "I've called for that too. I've said, let's not send out the diesel." That plan went back in the pan; what reached the table instead was somebody else's diesel.

The Hippie Through the wall. It was always going to end in the wall, same as the ban that went back in the pan, and nobody thanked the lentils either.

On Friday the G7 said in a statement it would "begin immediately" releasing 100 million barrels of oil and diesel over the next four months, coordinated by the International Energy Agency; its chairman, French President Emmanuel Macron, confirmed it. You will be looking for the vote that approved this. There is none; seven governments said so in a statement, and that was all it took. Take it by both ends and turn it over: underneath sit seven stockpiles, each built against a crisis its own country did not start.

The Fixer Lentils unthanked, stockpiles untouched, same complaint. I would have all seven of them sold off by Thursday, logo and all.

Le Monde, the paper on this table, has it as "G7 to release '100 million barrels' of fuel after US pressures EU on fuel crisis," and says plainly it was "due to the US-Iran war" that prices rose. At home the same release runs as prices having "skyrocketed" and now coming "down from peak," the war left out of the headline.

The Poet Sold by Thursday. Everything in this house gets sold by Thursday except the pressure, which nobody will take off my hands.

It serves seven governments and the drivers who buy from them. Europe spends down the stockpile it built for its own winter, and the American price chart turns, for now, back toward the first of September.

The Punk Back toward September again. Hand over the pressure and I will have the whole house down before it gets there.

“You start a war, diesel hits five eighty-five a gallon back home, and weeks before the election you get your allies in Europe to crack open their own emergency stock to bring your number down. That's the move: cause the mess, get somebody else to pay down the cleanup, call it coordination. There's already a next emergency paying for this one.”
Sal
“This isn't pressure, this is coordination — seven allies stepping up together, because that's what strong alliances do. Did I say pressure? That's — forget I said that. The G7 agreed, Macron announced it himself, nobody twisted any arms, and if domestic prices happen to come down right before the midterms, that's just good policy landing on schedule.”

Major economies will release fuel, including diesel, from their stockpiles as prices have skyrocketed in recent weeks. The Group of Seven (G7), which includes Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the U.K. and the U.S., said in a statement Friday that it would “begin immediately”
