Senate asks who authorized the Pentagon's Venezuela oil stake; the record says a chatbot, over hours, in December.

“Dems demanding Venezuela brief face State Department fury as senators leave town without answers”, 2 October 2026 (Photo via Fox News — the original report)

As it ran on the front

A reconciliation is two columns and the difference between them. Today the right-hand column is a memo, and the memo does not exist. Start with the filings in order.

Per Fox News, Senate Democrats have challenged the legality of a Pentagon equity stake — 35 percent — in NABEP, Venezuela's state oil company, and this week they left town without answers; the State Department's response, by Fox's own account, was fury.…

…(cont) Before that question was ever asked, the same oil had already changed names three times in the morgue. On August 28, Common Dreams reported analysts calling the arrangement "yet another Trump grift" and asking Congress to halt what they called a colonial takeover of the reserves. One day after that, on August 31, the same outlet reported the arrangement recast again, this time as cover for a resource grab riding on an energy crisis the administration's own Iran policy had produced. Grift, then gift, then cover story — three names for one percentage, and still no memo.

Then, per Truthout, comes where the percentage was actually decided: the president spent hours talking to Grok, the AI chatbot, last December, when Elon Musk was visiting the White House, reportedly working out the case for the invasion that produced the stake. That is the origin entry on this ledger — a conversation with software, logged in December, ten months before a sitting senator could get a straight answer about it.

This week closes the loop. Per CBS News, David Rivera, a former congressman convicted on federal charges for secretly lobbying on behalf of that same Venezuelan government, was sentenced to ten years. Reconcile the two columns: the lobbyist who worked the country's access to Washington drew a ten-year federal sentence this week. The senators who asked who authorized the Pentagon's ownership of that country's oil company drew a State Department that answered with fury and no memo at all.

Hon, that's the gap. Access to Caracas now has a documented price, measured in years, set by a federal court. Authority over 35 percent of what Caracas sells has no documented price at all, because nobody wrote the number down — it was arrived at in conversation, and conversations don't go in the file.

“You ask a chatbot for a restaurant recommendation, not whether to invade a country, but one of those happened and it's not the one you think. A guy goes to prison for ten years for quietly lobbying on Venezuela's behalf, while the stake itself — the actual 35 percent of their oil now sitting on the Pentagon's books — got decided over hours in a chat window and nobody's going to prison for that part at all. That's the con: the access to the money is a felony, the money itself is just policy.”

“Look, every administration consults outside advisors, that's just — that's modern governance, you want a president who doesn't use the tools available to him? And the State Department pushing back on Senate Democrats, that's not stonewalling, that's a department standing up for an ongoing operation instead of litigating it on cable news. Did I just call a chatbot transcript an "operation"? That's not — let me restate that.”
