NO IDEA, UNDER OATH

Rubio testifies his roommate's $50 million Caracas lobbying operation, which drew 10 years, escaped his notice.

As it ran on the front

A reconciliation is two columns and the difference between them. Start with today's new entry and work backward through the ledger already open on this desk.

Friday, per CBS News and The Hill, David Rivera — the former Florida congressman who ran a secret, multimillion-dollar lobbying campaign for Venezuela's government under the first Trump administration — was sentenced to 10 years in federal prison. He has been in federal custody without bond. The figure in the filing, per BBC, is $50 million.…

…(cont) Before the sentence, there was the testimony. Rivera's longtime friend and former housemate is Marco Rubio, now Secretary of State. BBC reports Rubio testified he had no idea what his roommate was doing for Caracas.

Before the testimony, there was the stonewall. Per Fox News, Senate Democrats this week left town without answers on the legality of the Pentagon's 35 percent equity stake in NABEP, Venezuela's state oil company; the State Department's own response, by Fox's account, was fury, not a briefing.

Before the stonewall, there was the chatbot. Truthout reports the president spent hours talking himself into the Venezuela invasion that produced that stake using an AI system — a decision process with no hearing, no vote, and, per the senators' complaint, no memo they've been shown.

Run the comparison the morgue offers. In September of last year — 2025, not this one — Nicolas Sarkozy became the first former French president sentenced to prison, five years, for criminal association. His former interior ministers drew two years and six years of house arrest under electronic tag; French law lets sentences of two years or less convert to an alternate form, and one minister's term was shortened further for health reasons. The statute did that converting. Nothing in this week's filings names what converts the ignorance here, or into what.

The ledger, dated October 2, 2026: a 35 percent stake, an hours-long chatbot session, a $50 million lobbying count, a 10-year sentence, and one claim of no idea, filed by the man who shared a house with the person who took the money.

“This is the oldest grift there is: live with the guy, take Venezuela's fifty million, and when the bill comes due the guy you lived with testifies to Congress he had no idea you had a second job. The real asset, the thirty-five percent stake in Venezuela's oil company, sits on a ledger the Senate can't even get a briefing on. That's not an oversight, hon, that's the system working exactly how it's built: keep the money upstream of anybody who has to answer for it.”

“Look, you can't hold a sitting Secretary of State responsible for what his housemate did off the clock years ago — people split rent, that doesn't make them business partners. Rubio testified, he said he didn't know, and that's — wait, did I just say "under oath" there? Scratch that, he testified, full stop, case closed. The stake, the chatbot, the stonewalled briefing — that's a separate department's paperwork, not a Rubio problem.”
