Ads praising the president's presidency were charged to border security, at the president's direction.

As it ran on the front
The rule that the public does not pay for compliments to the man running the government died this week, quietly, in the ordinary way these things die. Nothing was repealed. It was simply billed.
Here is the season, laid out the way we lay these out.…
…(cont) On the fifteenth, the Treasury secretary said the department was examining whether it could cut those checks without Congress — the examining being the part that matters, since the old arrangement was that Congress votes and then Treasury spends. The senator whose vote the checks require has said he will not fund them. A rule can die like that, between two sentences, and no casserole comes.
In that same stretch, 750,000 Americans lost their health coverage. On the first of October, thousands of refugees and some other immigrants with legal status lost Medicaid outright, the first real coverage losses under the big bill's cuts, while states and advocacy groups have been trying to warn them it was coming.
Now the ads. On the twenty-eighth of September the Senate majority leader objected to a taxpayer-funded "PSA" campaign that reuses materials from the 2024 presidential campaign and carries the on-screen disclaimer "Paid for by the U.S. Government." By the twenty-ninth, Senate Republicans were warning the president not to use taxpayer money to promote himself so brazenly; the spot in question pledges to "cast out the communists, Marxists and fascists." That same day the chair of the Appropriations Committee confirmed where the money came from — a pot of federal dollars meant for Customs and Border Protection. And today the Times reports that the president directed the spending himself.
So the border money bought the commercial, and the commercial says the disclaimer out loud. That is the shit of it. Not a penny-ante slush fund, not a sneak: a line item, a voiceover, and a receipt printed on the screen where the reader can see it.
The deceased is survived by 750,000 Americans without coverage, by the thousands who lost Medicaid on the first, by a $5,000 promise contingent on an election, and by a majority leader's mild objection.
In lieu of flowers, write your senator and ask for the appropriation line, the vendor, and the invoice for the ad — and keep the answer.
“They told 750,000 people the money ran out, then found money for a commercial about how great the boss is — out of the border pot, the one they holler about every November. And the promised five grand? That one needs Congress, which is the whole point: the check you might get is a maybe, the ad you already paid for is a done deal. When the Treasury starts examining whether it needs a vote at all, the vote is what's for sale.”
“It's a public service announcement — public, service, announcement, it says so right on the screen, paid for by the U.S. Government, which is transparency. Did I say the border money? That doesn't sound like me; appropriations get moved around constantly, ask anybody. And look, our own majority leader raised a concern, which proves the system is working, and he's still voting with us, which also proves it.”
