Russian oligarch money sues over a blocked tower, gets no answers over Trump Jr.'s wedding.

As it ran on the front

By September 7th, a quiet California suburb was in what the local paper called full revolt. A skyscraper had been proposed for Menlo Park, tied to the son of a Russian oligarch close to Vladimir Putin, dropped into a low-rise town of office parks and single-family streets. Residents turned out meeting after meeting to say no.

They kept saying it. The lawsuit followed what the paper called months of fierce opposition from residents — a dispute that ran the way these things are supposed to run. The stranger sued. A judge, not a crowd, will decide what happens next.…

…(cont) Rep. Robert Garcia, the committee's ranking member, pressed for answers on a Russian oligarch's reported role in a Trump family wedding: Donald Trump Jr.'s, in May, funded in part, ProPublica had reported, by Russian oligarch Umar Kremlev. The next day, September 15th, Garcia opened a formal investigation.

Line the two up and the asymmetry is the whole story. A California suburb told a Russian oligarch's son no, and the no survived contact with his lawyers in a courtroom. A House committee has been asking a different Russian oligarch's associate about a wedding since September 15th, and three weeks on, the answer is still nothing.

Same government this money sits close to. Same ocean it crossed to get here. One oligarch's money met zoning rules, public meetings, and now a judge who has to rule on the record. The other oligarch's money met a letter from a ranking member, and three weeks later, that is where it stands.

The suburb got its day in court. The wedding got a press release asking for one.

“Same kind of foreign money, same government it sits close to, and only one of them had to hire a lawyer — the other one just had to get invited to a wedding. A zoning fight in a California suburb has moved faster and further than a congressional inquiry into a president's son's wedding money. That's not two stories, that's the price of admission, and it depends on whose name is on the invite.”

“Look, a ranking member can write a letter, that's the whole job description — this is the system working, not stonewalling. And Menlo Park, that's just a neighborhood fighting a building, every town does that, it's got nothing to do with — wait, why would I even bring up the tower, nobody asked me about the tower.”
