Rivera gets 10 years for secret Venezuela lobbying, five less than Weinstein got nine days earlier.

As it ran on the front

Friday, in Miami, a federal judge handed David Rivera ten years. Not for violence. Not for a single transaction.

Nine days earlier, a different federal judge handed Harvey Weinstein fifteen years for sexual assault. Put the two numbers on the same page and they sit in the same decade — a former congressman's decade of hidden foreign money and a movie producer's assaults, priced within shouting distance of each other by courts that otherwise have nothing to do with one another.…

…(cont) The name standing next to Rivera's number is Marco Rubio. Not a bystander — a longtime friend, a former roommate, now the sitting Secretary of State. Rubio testified he had no idea what Rivera was doing. Ten years of it. Fifty million dollars of it, run, according to the government's own case, through the years the two men were close enough that reporters still describe them by the apartment they once shared.

Maybe that's true. People live next to things they don't see. But notice what has to be true for it to be true: a decade-long, multimillion-dollar foreign lobbying campaign, run by a man this close to the country's current chief diplomat, left no mark Rubio noticed, no question he asked, no moment it surfaced in a shared kitchen or a shared car or a shared campaign. The government indicted the money. It left the proximity alone.

Rivera is in federal custody without bond right now, waiting on whatever appeal his lawyers file next. The $50 million isn't coming back from wherever a decade of concealment put it. And the sentence that gets remembered outside Miami won't be his — it will be Weinstein's, because that one has a face attached to a crime people already understand. Rivera's has a number attached to a relationship that hasn't gotten a second look in Washington. Ten years is a long time to sit with that arrangement and still call it coincidence.

“Ten years for hiding fifty million in secret lobbying money, and the guy who used to split rent with him is now running the State Department. The official account is Rubio didn't notice a decade of it — maybe. But watch how often "I had no idea" turns out to be the safest sentence in Washington, because proximity to power doesn't need a confession, it just needs a title and an alibi.”

“Look, the Secretary of State can't be expected to audit every old friend's business dealings — that's not — I mean, is it a crime to have shared an apartment in your twenties? Rubio testified under oath, case closed, and frankly dragging him into this over who he knew back then is exactly the kind of guilt-by-association smear the left always — did I just say "the left always"? That's not — forget I said that.”
