White House manufactures an audience for Trump TV, shrinks the one it already has

“White House defends new press aide who posed with rifle in ‘Fuck Joe Biden’ shirt”, 4 October 2026 (Photo via The Guardian — the original report)

As it ran on the front

The White House unveiled Trump TV this week with a photo of a packed cabin, every passenger watching, delighted, convinced. I can defend that photo. I will defend that photo.

Here is the audience: a real plane, a real camera, passengers with their eyes on a screen. I should clarify — the photo is from February 2023. The passengers were watching the Super Bowl. One of them was watching "Hitch." Somebody ran it through an AI tool and painted a different channel onto those same screens before the White House posted it this week, with no note that anything had been changed. So the audience is real. It is just not this audience, watching this channel, this week. The launch-day crowd America saw was built afterward, in software, out of a three-year-old football game.…

…(cont) I want to be clear that none of this touches how this press shop handles access, because that's a separate issue. Except CNN was blocked from the pool again on October 1st, with a federal judge's order on the books keeping that particular ban off until October 8th. Five networks had only just walked back into the room on September 25th, after a standoff over that same outlet. The rotation that's supposed to run itself has become something this office turns on and off by hand.

And this is the office that, on October 4th, stood by its newest hire, Beni Rae Harmony, 24, after a 2021 photograph surfaced of her holding a rifle in a shirt reading "Fuck Joe Biden." The White House called her a trusted voice for the movement. Not a clarification, not a distancing — a defense, issued the same week this office sent the country a manufactured cabin full of fans and pulled a network out of the room.

A photo, a shirt, a ban: each one checks out as a fact. What doesn't check out is the office insisting, every time, that what you saw is what happened.

“They faked a cabin full of fans for a channel nobody's watched yet, then kept CNN out of the room so nobody could check anything else. Same office stood behind a staffer's rifle photo and her "Fuck Joe Biden" shirt without blinking. When the press shop controls both the audience and the access, you're not getting the news, you're getting the commercial.”

“That photo is a hundred percent real — real plane, real passengers, genuine excitement for the president's channel. Okay, it's a real photo of a different event from three years ago, but the enthusiasm is evergreen, that's the point. Nobody's lying here, we're just — we're reusing a visual.”

The White House has promoted “Trump TV” using an AI-altered photo of passengers apparently watching the president’s new streaming channel. But the image was originally posted online in February 2023, showing passengers watching the NFL Super Bowl, with one watching the film “Hitch”.
