CBS exclusively obtained drone-strike video the Army still hasn't shown the dead soldier's parents.

Six U.S. troops died at Camp Buehring in Kuwait this March when an Iranian drone found the base in the early days of a war the administration said would be short. One of them was Army Reserve Capt. Cody Khork. By September his parents, Jim and Stacey Khork, were still asking the Army for the one thing a family of a combat death is owed: what happened and why. CBS News reported on September 10th that the Khorks had asked the Army to release its internal investigation into the strike that killed their son. The Army had not released it then. Seven months after the strike, and nearly a month after the Khorks' public request, the Army still has not released it.

On October 7th, CBS News did what the investigation apparently had not: it obtained the video. Exclusive footage, shot from a service member's own vantage point at the base in northwest Kuwait, shows Iranian drones hovering, diving, and detonating on the installation in March. A second angle, from a different person on the ground, shows the same attack and its aftermath.…

…(cont) This is not a story about whether the Army can investigate a strike that kills its own troops. It can. That authority is the one the Khorks asked the Army to use back in September — asking an institution to use a power only makes sense if the institution already has it. The gap here is not a missing law. It is a finding sitting somewhere inside the Army, unreleased, while a television network's exclusive does the public accounting instead.

Iran has by now struck U.S. forces in at least eight countries in this war, CBS reports, with billions in U.S. military property damaged or destroyed. The Camp Buehring strike was one attack in one of those eight. Six dead is the number tied to this attack alone. The Army does not need new authority to tell the Khorks what killed their son. It needs to finish the inquiry it already started, and say so, on the record, before the next exclusive beats it there too.
