Tennessee has preserved the syringes from the execution Christa Pike survived, which is also the condition a thing is kept in when you intend to use it again.

As it ran on the front
The statement reads better end to end, so here it is end to end.
On September 30 Tennessee gave Christa Pike, 50, two doses of pentobarbital. The state had a court's clearance and its own protocol, and the equipment went in as written. Governor Bill Lee said the next day it was "deeply disturbing" that a prisoner remained alive and snoring forty minutes after a double dose of the drug that should have quickly killed her, suspended all executions in the state until at least the end of the year, and ordered an independent inquiry. Three corrective actions inside a day. That is the part of the record the state would like read first.…
…(cont) Friday, her attorneys told a court she was unconscious and on a ventilator and that hospital staff were working to clear the pentobarbital from her system; in a separate statement the same day they said she was in critical condition and receiving lifesaving medical care. The New York Times reported she had been brought to a hospital with burned and blistered arms. Court documents reported by the New York Post the next day say she thought her arm would burst open; her experts describe pentobarbital as a caustic, highly alkaline chemical that burns flesh and veins on contact, akin to bleach or Drano. Her lawyers call it torture. A reporter who witnessed it said, "I've never seen anything like what we saw Wednesday night."
Review, then. On Saturday the commissioner of the Tennessee Department of Correction, Frank Strada, resigned; the governor announced it; Strada leaves next month. Pike's lawyers count five botched executions under that leadership across two states since 2022, and the Times reported on October 2 that four were in Arizona, where Strada oversaw executions, and were on the record by the time Tennessee hired him. The Times put the rest in a headline that Saturday: hired despite a trail of troubled executions. The hiring file was complete before the first beat of this story.
And the syringes have been preserved, which the state offers as evidence of seriousness. Preserved for the review. Preserved is also the condition a thing is in when you intend to use it again, and the state has not confirmed it will not. By Thursday a court had cited the failure itself as grounds to proceed with an identical procedure. Medical staff asked that Pike be unshackled; the state said no. By Saturday she was back in her cell.
The complaint from the right that week was not that the needle failed. National Review argued that medicalizing and sanitizing capital punishment erases the deterrence it is supposed to create; the Washington Examiner called the process grimly farcical; a former Knoxville police chief warned the botch takes focus off the victim, Colleen Slemmer, and could end capital punishment in Tennessee altogether. On October 6 the Pentagon answered. Sean Parnell announced what Pete Hegseth had recommended and Donald Trump had approved: death by firing squad for Nidal Hasan, the former Army major a court-martial sentenced to death on 28 August 2013 for killing 13 people at Fort Hood in 2009. Four days later the office set December 3, 1:30 p.m. — the clock reading of the moment the shooting began seventeen years ago — and said it would be livestreamed. For the survivors, transparently, timed to the minute of the thing they survived. The BBC calls it a first for the American military since the Second World War.
Parts on the table, all of them already real.
The independent inquiry, ordered by the governor on the record.
The syringes, in custody — booked into that inquiry as evidence rather than back into inventory.
The hiring file, which the Times showed was readable in advance; Strada leaves next month, and someone is hired after that.
The camera. Tennessee's suspension runs out at the end of the year, and December 3 is a Thursday on somebody's calendar already.
