Seven months after a drone killed Capt. Cody Khork at Camp Buehring, the footage is at CBS News and the Army's investigation is still not with his parents.

Who gave the tape to CBS News is where you will want to begin, and the question will occupy you handsomely for a week, and it is the wrong end of the business entirely. Begin with title instead. Who owns the footage of an American officer's death? The service that took it owns it, holds it, and sets the hour at which anyone else sees it.
In March an Iranian drone found Camp Buehring, in Kuwait, in the early days of a war the administration said would be short, and killed six American troops. One of them was Army Reserve Capt. Cody Khork. His parents, Jim and Stacey Khork, asked the Army to release its internal investigation into the strike that killed their son; CBS News reported that request on September 10th. The Army had not released the investigation then. Seven months after the strike, the Army has not released it. On October 7th CBS News had the video of the strike. Exclusively obtained, in the trade's phrase. Obtained — obtained, mind you, which is the word one uses about a thing nobody handed over.…

The same arrangement runs at scale, and ran all week. On September 17th every Senate Democrat excepting Fetterman signed an open letter pressing Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth for a cost breakdown of the war in Iran — a letter The Hill called "largely symbolic." That same day the Pentagon's policy chief, Elbridge Colby, briefed the Senate Armed Services Committee behind a closed door, and Democrats and Republicans alike emerged frustrated by what they described as a lack of clear answers. You are waiting for somebody to compel a document ... and that Tuesday Rep. Thomas Massie had seized the House floor to impeach Hegseth "for high crimes and misdemeanors," and Speaker Mike Johnson sent the House home for a seven-week recess, which Massie says blocked the effort. Sen. Thom Tillis, who voted to confirm Hegseth, said of him on the 18th: "He needs to go."
What the public is permitted is the price. Moody's Analytics estimates American consumers have spent over $121 billion extra on energy alone since the conflict began less than eight months ago, and puts the war's cost at an average of $1,760 per household. Rounded estimates, both of them, and published. A household's share of the war is a figure you may read over breakfast. The Army's investigation into the strike that killed Capt. Cody Khork is not available to the two people who asked for it.
The week went on. On the 17th the United Nations fact-finding mission found "reasonable grounds" to believe the US military committed war crimes in two airstrikes inside Iran, which killed at least 178 civilians, among them 123 children at Minab; the report said the United States should pay "full reparations to victims," as the New York Post had it, and in that paper's telling the White House came out swinging. On Thursday the President said: "I have a big decision coming up. Do I want to go in and annihilate them, or do I not?" Fox News found 71% of voters think the administration lacks a plan to end the war.
Seven months. A television network has the video. Jim and Stacey Khork are still asking the Army for the investigation.
