The country takes two finished projects back out of service: measles elimination, certified in 2000 and now at 1,004 cases in Pennsylvania, and the decades-old ownership limit, repealed 2-1 the week a coalition invoked it.

As it ran on the front

Two deaths are recorded here this morning, and the family asks that neither be mistaken for a person.

The media ownership limit died Saturday at the Federal Communications Commission, by a vote of 2 to 1. It was born in the broadcast rules, had been in poor health for years, and was still doing work on the day it went: a coalition had invoked that very limit to stop a consolidation. It is survived by three station groups and by one newsroom that quietly thinned its report on Pentagon contracts for the president's sons. It was preceded in death by the public-interest standard.…

…(cont) There is no mystery in the mechanism. Two votes beat one vote, and a rule that stood for decades goes in the ground on a Saturday. It has changed, in the direction of fewer people deciding what a county hears, and calling that competition is the kind of shit that does not improve with repetition.

The limit had been dying in public for a fortnight. On 23 September, government lawyers told a federal court that press coverage of the president is a privilege, not a right. The next day a judge appointed by this president ordered White House access restored to CNN, MS NOW and Politico. An order of that kind returns a pass to a reporter. It does not return the wall the gate was cut into. On that same Thursday, in another courtroom, opponents of the Paramount–Warner Bros. Discovery merger filed an emergency motion asking to be heard before a settlement — the sale the receipts show pending while the rule that governed such sales was retired.

A repealed limit does not write a story or kill one. It decides how few owners may be left in the room where that is settled, and the week supplied the story: a county trying to learn how much measles is in it.

Elimination status, certified by the United States in 2000, died this year at twenty-six. On 25 August Pennsylvania's health department confirmed the state's first two measles deaths in 35 years, both unvaccinated residents of Lancaster County, the state count near 400. A Jefferson County coroner reported a third in mid-September. This paper has printed two dates for the fourth — 15 September in one column, 23 September in another. I take the 15th; that column checked the file against what came after, and the 23rd is the day a pediatrician said the nickname out loud. A teenager was among the four, and two of them were infants too young for a first dose. It was the most measles deaths the country had seen in a single year since 1992. By 4 October the state had confirmed a fifth.

On 28 August the health secretary had asked in public whether the two deaths Pennsylvania reported were even real; eighteen days later the state reported two more. A governor elsewhere, at roughly a tenth of that count, signed a state of emergency. Pennsylvania, carrying 977, issued a disaster declaration and withheld the emergency order. This week an appeals court took up the vaccine rollback that secretary signed.

Elimination was a chore. A clinic, a dose, a second dose, a card in a drawer, a record kept by people whose names are not in this paper, every year for twenty-six years. The cause of death is listed as optional. It is survived by 1,004 cases in one state and by a court docket, and was preceded in death by the habit of trusting a number because somebody is paid to keep it.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you find out who owns the station that will tell your county its next case count, and ask it, out loud, for the number.
