THE TALLY
Pentagon spends six months confirming one death, zero so far counting Iranian civilians lawmakers demanded.

As it ran on the front
The document in question is the Pentagon's own running count of Americans killed in the Iran war. It does not editorialize. It moves, clause by clause, mostly after someone outside the building has already done the counting.
In September, five Pentagon officials told the Washington Post, on condition of anonymity, that at least 22 service members had died in the war — more than the department's public number said. The Pentagon did not confirm that figure. Four days later, Truthout reported the department had quietly added a death from "last Friday" that it had not announced on its own. The next day, the Pentagon put a name to it: a Virginia soldier, the 19th American identified as killed in the war.…
…(cont) On October 8th, Senator Chris Murphy told the Guardian that Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth is trying to hide the costs of the Iran war from the public. He did not say which costs he meant. By then the department had given him more than one to choose from.
On October 11th, the Pentagon's own tally reached 21 — two more deaths folded in, with no public accounting of when they happened or why they had not been counted before that week. The same week, 74 lawmakers asked the department to start counting something it has never counted at all: Iranian civilians killed in the war. The department has not answered that request. It has, notably, found time to answer a different one.
Which brings us to today's clause. The Intercept reports that the Pentagon has now acknowledged the March death of Maj. Sorffly Davius — six months after it happened, and only after The Intercept spent those six months asking. No reason for the gap appears in the record. All together now: the document had this fact in March. It published the fact in October. The distance between those two dates is the story, and the Pentagon did not close it on its own; a reporter closed it, by asking the same question often enough that silence cost the department more than an answer would have.
The 74 lawmakers are still waiting on the number nobody at the department has started.
“They can find a dead American soldier from March once a reporter won't let go, but they can't find a single Iranian civilian in six months of this war — because one of those counts gets read into a hearing and the other one doesn't. That's not a records problem, that's a choice about whose death goes in the ledger. The ledger is the budget for who gets to matter.”
“Look, casualty confirmation is a rigorous, multi-step process, and six months just reflects the department's commitment to getting the name right before — did I say six months? That's not a department number, that's a reporter's number, and frankly the fact that we answered it at all should count as transparency. As for the civilians, that's a different office, a different process, a different — I'm not saying we're not counting it, I'm saying nobody's said we are.”
