After Saudi Arabia said Iran's Houthi allies carried out another strike at Riyadh's airport, Iran called the U.S. effort to negotiate toward ending the war "insufficient."

White House weighs joining a war Delta already decided was too dangerous to fly into.

As it ran on the front
How many people have died at Riyadh's airport. I ask because I asked it already, Thursday or thereabouts, standing at the counter at the corner store, and the fellow behind the register said three. I wrote three in my book. Today the answer is twenty, and one of them was American, and I don't know what to do with a number that keeps growing without the count saying where it stops.
So let me go back to where it started, because it didn't start with twenty, it started with an alert. September nineteenth, air-raid sirens over Riyadh, the government telling people to stay where they were. That's the opening page. The count there is zero.…
…(cont) Two weeks and change later — October fourth — Washington takes a position. The Saudi-led coalition is going to retake territory holding about seventy percent of Yemen's population, and the United States backs that offensive. I want to be careful with this one, because the paper says "backs," not "joins," and there's a difference between signing the check and being at the counter when it clears.
October sixth: two more Saudi airports get hit, and Turkey and Pakistan send troops to help defend the kingdom. That's three countries now standing behind the same ledger.
October seventh: the Houthis say they've hit more airports, more military bases. I don't have a death count for that day. I looked.
October eighth: two ballistic missiles land on King Khalid International, the one in Riyadh, the big one, and the airport's disruptions start in earnest.
October ninth: three Saudi citizens are confirmed dead. Three. That's the number I wrote in my book, the one I was carrying around.
And today — the twelfth — the number is twenty, for the week, and it includes an American, and the airport has not reopened. Delta, which had a nonstop route from Atlanta sitting in the schedule for Riyadh, has delayed it until March. "Evolving developments in the region" is the phrase they used, and I'll give them this: it's accurate. The developments have evolved.
Here's the part that sits with me. This isn't the first time somebody has flown a drone at a Saudi airport. In June of 2019 — seven years before this week — Houthi drones hit Jizan and the airport at Abha, two different fields, same coalition on the other side. The coalition shot one down near Abha, and that's the whole of what the record says happened next. Seven years between one set of airports and this one, and I only bring up the math because the math is the only part of this I can check.
Which brings me to the twenty. October fourth to October twelfth is eight days. Eight days. I had a dentist appointment pushed back longer than that.
My wife says I should let this one go, that Yemen is above my pay grade, and she's probably right, she usually is. But I keep a raincoat on the hook by the door for exactly this kind of week, the kind where you don't know if you're walking into rain or only the threat of it. Right now Washington is standing in that same doorway, one hand already on the first coat it put on weeks ago, the other hand reaching for a second.
Oh — excuse me, one more thing before you go. The position backing the offensive is dated the fourth. The consideration — whether to join outright — is dated today, the same morning the week's death toll came in at twenty. Which one of those came first, and will it still be the fourth the next time somebody has to ask?
“They write the backing before anybody's dead and call it policy, then write the grief count after and call it news — same move, eight days apart. Delta figured out this route wasn't safe faster than Washington can figure out whether it's already at war. Somebody's kid works that airport, somebody's kid was supposed to be on that flight in March, and the paperwork keeps landing before they do.”
“Backing an ally's offensive isn't the same as joining the war — wait, is that still the distinction we're using this week? Considering further action is just due diligence; every White House weighs its options, that's not escalation, that's prudence. The real story here is Houthi aggression, full stop — did I just hand them the entire week's death toll as somebody else's problem? Let me circle back.”
