Asked which state licensed her to practice law, the new press secretary answered: "when I moved to China"

As it ran on the front

October 9. The president announces his pick for press secretary, a conservative commentator, and says he picked a "devoted fan." October 9, the Washington Examiner: she is 41, she came out of the Homeland Security press shop, she worked several weeks earlier this year as deputy spokeswoman for a department of 270,000 people and then left abruptly, and the pick caught current and former DHS officials off guard. She replaces Karoline Leavitt, who left at the end of August after the birth of her second child. Tuesday, the first briefing. Tuesday, after the briefing, a reporter asks which state she passed the bar exam in, and she says, "when I moved to China." Wednesday, the Campaign for Accountability files a complaint with the State Bar of California. Wednesday, the Guardian reports that no public record shows her licensed to practice law in the US states where she has lived. Wednesday, the New York Post reports that Jen Psaki called her a "potentially fake lawyer," and that she defended her background by citing her Pepperdine law degree and her international transaction law practice. Wednesday, the Washington Examiner reports that gamblers are wagering on how long she stays at the podium.

That is the list. I read it in order. I am not adding anything to it.…

…(cont) I did write one line down, because I liked how it was built. Hold on, it's in the raincoat, inside pocket, under the — here. The complaint: "A law degree, standing alone, does not entitle its holder to practice law." Standing alone. Their words, not mine. And the complaint grants the degree, right there in the same paragraph: Juris Doctor, 2011, Pepperdine. Nobody is arguing about the diploma. What the group says it cannot locate is a record of admission in any US jurisdiction. So which document is the one in dispute — the one everybody agrees exists, or the one nobody can find?

There's a smaller thing underneath it that I keep going back to. The complaint says when a reporter asked the White House press office whether she had ever been admitted to a bar, the press office answered by referring the reporter to the president's social media post. Is a post a record of admission? Where does the complaint say the record would be, if there were one?

My car needs a fan belt, which is how I spent Saturday morning at the garage on the corner with nothing to do but read the walls. Eddie has two things framed over the register. One is from a school in Ohio, his name in that curly writing, a date under it. The other is a card from the state — smaller, uglier, a number on it, and it expires. The card is the one that lets him put the inspection sticker on my windshield. I asked him once what happens if the pretty one is hanging there and the card has run out. He said the sticker comes off and the state comes by. Then I asked him the question the reporter asked: which state, Eddie. He said Pennsylvania, and he said the year. Took two seconds. He gave me a state and a year, and the question only had room for the state.

About the podium itself. The Examiner says that on her second day she briefed for a little under fifteen minutes, and that eight of those minutes were the opening statement. That leaves the room something under seven. How long does a question about a card take to ask? Psaki needed three words.

Oh — I'm sorry, you've got your coat on already. One more and I'll let you go. The betting markets price a short run, fine, that resolves itself. The complaint went to California, and California has a form, and on the form there is a line that wants one thing: the state. One word fits. She has already answered that exact question in public, on the record, in front of the room, on Tuesday. What does the transcript say she put there? "When I moved to China."

“They tell you the briefing room belongs to the public, and then the person standing in it answers "which state" with a travel date. Look at what the press office did when a reporter asked a plain records question: pointed him at a social media post. That's the whole con — turn the one room where somebody has to answer into a comment section, and the gamblers end up the only people in Washington keeping an honest ledger.”
Sal
“She has a Juris Doctor from Pepperdine, 2011, it's in the complaint itself, nobody disputes the diploma, and an international transactions practice is not some traffic docket in Fresno. Did I say "practice"? That doesn't sound like me. Anybody with a stamp can file a complaint, the Guardian can ask whatever it likes, and look, the president called her a devoted fan — whatever else you want to say, that's not a credential anyone's accused her of faking.”
