The contribution limit died this week of natural causes, survived by a record $276 million, a $400 million party edge, and the 100 mph ceiling on Ukraine's air defense that the contractor spent three days attributing to the government that funds the terminals.

As it ran on the front
The contribution limit died this week in Washington, after a long illness nobody treated.
It was born of a plain notion — that there ought to be a ceiling on what one man puts into one party — and it spent its working life being walked around rather than argued with. On Monday the walking finished. The Times reported Musk the largest known midterm donor in American political history: $276 million. On September 22 the reported plan had been at least one hundred million. Three weeks on it was nearly triple, and not one rule on the books stood in the road. The money moves through America PAC, an outside group, which on September 3 disclosed its first spending of the cycle — mail advertising. Envelopes, to addresses. The Republican side carried a $400 million edge.…
…(cont) Then Tuesday, with Russian missiles inbound, Ukraine's Starlink missile tracker failed. Above one hundred miles an hour the military terminals were throttled. Not a cut. Cuts are events; a limit is a setting, settings have dials, and the dial was not in Kyiv. Ukraine's army does not own those terminals. SpaceX manages them, the Pentagon funds them, and what Ukraine has is the use of other people's property for as long as the owners care to allow it.
The attributions came three times. Tuesday, Musk said any restriction on Starshield would come from the United States government. Wednesday, "Starshield systems are owned and controlled by the US government." Thursday, the government may be behind the slowdown. A senator asked that the ceiling be lifted; they had no lever but the asking. Zelensky warned the throttling would cost lives. Musk said Wednesday that Zelensky should "go". By Thursday Ukraine reported access improved and the speed ceiling still disrupting its "missions" — so the ceiling outlived all three attributions, and the only firm proposal of the week concerned who ought to be president of Ukraine.
None of this arrived from nowhere. On September 30 Hegseth named the same donor to co-lead Project Meridian, the department's study of the future of warfare, led by Pentagon official Emil Michael, with Palmer Luckey and Newt Gingrich along. On October 3 the Times noted the conflicts of interest resurfacing: billions in military contracts, a seat on the board that advises the buyer. On Wednesday CBS reported the administration may have withheld intelligence warnings to Ukraine about the Russian strikes that cut power to six hundred thousand people in Kyiv.
Watch what the numbers do in this story. On September 29 CBS reported a Pentagon personnel data breach had taken months to find; on September 30 Fox News put 2.76 million Social Security numbers to it, with the employment records attached, belonging to living Americans. A headline this month read "over 3 million" above a story still counting 2.76 million. The figures go up in the telling. The people inside them stay exactly where they were, which is on a list.
So the cause of death, entered flat: nothing illegal occurred. No rule was broken, no referee was overruled, no court was defied. The limit did not lose a fight. There was no fight, and that is the shit of it — a rule can be perfectly intact and perfectly beside the point, and calling that a loophole is penny-ante. A loophole is a flaw. This worked.
The contribution limit is survived by a record donation, a $400 million edge, and a dial in private hands set above another country's air defense. It was preceded in death by the arm's length that once stood between a contractor and the building that buys from him.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you get it in writing — one name, one office — of who may raise that ceiling, and that your senator be made to say it out loud before the next one is lowered.
