“Rep. Ilhan Omar’s residence searched as part of ongoing criminal investigation: DOJ”, 13 October 2026 (Photo via ABC News — the original report)
As it ran on the front
Ilhan Omar that he would not describe, the same day Omar said no one at the Department of Homeland Security had contacted her about one. The government put exactly one account of itself on the record that week: a statement to the Associated Press and Fox News calling the search part of a criminal fraud investigation into her citizenship paperwork. One sentence, no further detail, is what the file holds from the government's own mouth.
The next day, 13 October, Omar's campaign sent out a fundraising email calling the investigation "baseless" and "partisan," according to a screenshot of the email's text obtained by NewsNation and reported in The Hill. A raid became a subject line within twenty-four hours.…
…(cont) On 14 October, the Guardian noted the timing: agents had searched her home, under a warrant a judge had already approved, weeks before Democratic candidates, Omar included, face voters in November. The next day, Common Dreams reported on a Wall Street Journal account that the search was one piece of what the Journal called an effort "to strip her of her US citizenship and ultimately deport her," built in part on questions about how she obtained citizenship to begin with.
By 17 October, three more documents had surfaced on the same day. A New York Post report, citing people familiar with the investigation, traced the search back to a text message on her sister's phone. A second Post report said federal agents have since taken her passport and her computers, moving toward a deportation case. And her attorneys, in a letter the Associated Press obtained and the Guardian published, called the search "neither justified nor lawful," and asked the Justice Department to return what agents took and preserve any recording made during it. All together now: a text message, a passport, a letter asking for the passport back.
Five weeks into this file, here is what it contains: one government sentence, one relative's phone, one fundraising pitch, and one letter from her own lawyers asking for the receipts. I am not characterizing any of that. I am reading it in the order it was filed.

“They spent five weeks building a "criminal investigation" the government has explained in exactly one sentence, and when you follow the paper trail backward it starts with a family text message, not a crime. That's not law enforcement, that's an opposition file with a badge stapled to it, and this time the file belongs to a sitting member of Congress three weeks before her party's voters show up.”
“This is a straightforward fraud investigation, full stop — the Justice Department said so, in writing, to two wire services, and one sentence is all the transparency due process actually requires. The timing, landing weeks before her constituents vote, is a complete coincidence that I am not going to dwell on — did I say coincidence? That's not really the word I was reaching for.”
