Residents of the province were asked if they wished to remain in Canada or to hold another vote on breaking away, in a referendum that was a win for Prime Minister Mark Carney.

Republican operatives advised Alberta's bid to leave Canada, rewarded with more than two-thirds voting to remain.

As it ran on the front
Alberta voted today to stay in Canada, by more than two-thirds, in a referendum Republican operatives had quietly advised from outside. I shall go slowly through what was in it: a law already sitting on the shelf, a trade war running underneath, and a prime minister ready to serve the result as proof of his own plan.
Start with the law. On December 8, 2022, Alberta's legislature passed the Sovereignty Within a United Canada Act. Take it by both ends and turn it over: it does not let the province leave, only lets its cabinet set aside a federal law it dislikes. You will be looking for the clause that lets Alberta go. There is no such clause. It sat on the shelf through 2023, 2024, 2025, until October 7, when the BBC asked how the province's economy might fare if it broke away.…
Clive On the shelf. I've a stanza that's sat there longer, and mine has never once needed a referendum to be ignored.
Gary Ignored. Give me a hammer and the shelf's gone before lunch; your stanza can stay in the gap.
By October 16, the law had a use. Prime Minister Mark Carney said, in the New York Post, that the United States wanted to split Canada from oil-rich Alberta, the trade war already running under the vote like a pot left on the heat.
Rob Left on the heat, that's the boiler. I turned it off in March for the kitty and got blamed for the damp ever since.
Keith Blamed for the damp. There's an angle in damp, properly bottled, and I can have it shelved as Alberta Basement by Thursday.
Today Albertans were asked, under the Let Alberta Decide campaign, to remain in Canada or vote again on leaving it. A referendum offering the leaving or another vote on leaving is, underneath, still about leaving. Separatist leaders behind the campaign had sought advice from Republican operatives, Truthout reported. The campaign went into the oven with that advice and came out, by the BBC's preliminary count, with more than two-thirds of Alberta voters choosing to stay, Washington left in the kitchen to watch it fail.
The BBC, which is what they have here, ran the result as 'Let's move on'. The same outlet has Carney saying 'Great result for Canada'. At home, the New York Times had it as Alberta Voters Reject Leaving Canada in Referendum on Separatism.
Carney eats a unity win that puts Alberta's oil and gas at the center of a plan he says will leave Canada 'much less dependent on the United States.' The campaign's backers in Washington pay for a trade war that just produced the one result it was not built to produce.
Rob Less dependent on the United States. Tell that to the leccy, which still reads in dollars no matter whose referendum we hold.
“Washington exported a secession campaign into a neighboring country's oil province, and it lost two-to-one. That's not meddling as a side effect, that's the plan — start a trade war, threaten to make Canada the 51st state, and hope the province splits off the resources. Carney gets to call it proof the trade war backfired; Alberta's oil stays Canadian either way.”
“Some campaign staffers talked to a few Republican consultants, that's advice, not an operation — did I say consultants? I mean experts, everybody hires experts. And sure, the President mentioned making Canada the 51st state, but that's just — look, sovereignty's sovereignty, except maybe not that one.”

The receipts
Separatist leaders sought advice on their “Let Alberta Decide” campaign from Republican operatives.
Preliminary referendum results show that more than two-thirds of Alberta voters support remaining part of Canada, easing concerns over national unity.
Voters’ emphatic rejection of separation strengthens Mark Carney’s energy strategy in the face of a US trade war and threats Canadians are proving to be a voice of sanity. In roundly rejecting the idea of separating from Canada, voters in the oil- and gas-rich province of Alberta sensibly backed the nation-building strategy of the prime…
The Canadian province has voted overwhelmingly to remain part of Canada, though deep political divisions endure.
