VOTES
The brakes exist on paper three times over. The House directed an end to the war in June, 215 to 208, four Republicans crossing 1; it did it again in July, 214 to 208 2; the Senate matched it in between, 50 to 48 3. Within hours of the threat against the mediator, Tim Kaine announced a resolution to bar military action against Oman — a sentence no senator expected to need this year 4. That is what the left is building: not a mood, a record, every vote dated and every name attached. The needle stops at VOTES rather than THE BRAKES for the plain reason that the war is in its twenty-fourth week — the votes have been cast and the war has not stopped. Three majorities are a measured fact. A stopped war would be a different one, and it has not happened yet.

DEMOLITION
The war is in its twenty-fourth week, and the sixty-day window for ending it expired Monday with no deal 1. The talks it was meant to produce run through Oman, which has reached an understanding with Tehran on a transit map for the strait 2. The president's message to the mediator, delivered on television as the window closed: "If Oman gets in the way, we'll bomb the shit out of them" 2. It was the second time he has threatened the mediator 3. Strength, the sales pitch runs, is what gets deals done. The record shows the deal expiring and the threats aimed at the venue. A man who wants out of a burning building does not threaten the fire exit. The needle reads DEMOLITION because that is what the record shows being done to the exits — located, threatened, and closed, in order.

“He's threatening to bomb the country hosting his own peace talks. That's not a negotiation, that's a man setting fire to the exit and calling it a fire drill.”
“Threatening the host is a negotiating posture, very standard. Did I hear a threat? I didn't hear a threat. That was leverage, and leverage is perfectly legal.”
