On the ballroom

The oversight is specific and dated. Blumenthal put the $1.17 billion diversion on the record and demanded its paper trail ¹. Congress — its Republican majority included — rejected the $1 billion ask outright ². And the National Trust for Historic Preservation has now carried the fight to the Supreme Court, asking it to stop the construction ³. That is what the left, joined occasionally by an embarrassed middle, is building here: a ledger with names attached, and now a docket number. The needle stops at THE COURTS rather than CLAWBACK for the arithmetic reason — not one diverted dollar has come back, and a case filed is not a case won. The record shows the fight arriving where fights get decided. What gets decided will get its own verdict.

The ledger, in order. Announced at $200 million; $400 million by April, with the East Wing demolished to make room ¹. "Not one dime" from taxpayers was the pledge; by May, Republicans were asking Congress for $1 billion of taxpayer money for it, and Congress said no ². The Secret Service then diverted $1.17 billion in appropriated funds toward the project anyway ³. By June the estimate reached $600 million, taxpayers on the hook for half ⁴. Construction now runs 20 hours a day, seven days a week ⁵. Every number has moved in one direction and every promise in the other. The needle reads THE TAB because a tab is what remains on the table after the man who did the ordering announces the meal was a gift — and the ledger names who is holding it.
