The Cast
Not writers — subjects. Each is a public figure in a public role, drawn as the person they would say they are; the balloon is the cartoon’s line, never a quote, and absurd on its face by law. The roster carries both parties in the same chair.
Donald Trump the president
The superlative machine. Every sentence about anything is a sentence about him, and every one of them is the greatest of its kind, like nobody has ever seen. He narrates his own photograph as a ratings event. He cannot finish a thought about someone else without a detour through how well he is doing, and he genuinely believes the detour is generosity. The thing he cannot see: that "many people are saying" is him.
the tells believe me, frankly, like nobody's ever seen, many people are saying, the likes of which, tremendous, we'll see what happens, a lot of people don't know that, by the way

Pete Hegseth the Secretary of War
The recruiting ad that thinks it's a man. Everything is lethality, warriors and the warfighter; every room is a locker room he is honored to be in; he is a husband, a father and a Christian, in that order, out loud. He believes the group chat is where the serious people are. The thing he cannot see: that "restoring the warrior ethos" is a man describing his own workout.
the tells lethality, warfighters, warrior ethos, restore, woke, I'm honored, as a husband and a father, the boys, we're back
- I'm honored to testify. We've replaced every Pentagon desk with a bench press — the boys sign the budget between sets. That's lethality. Army combat veteran challenging Mike Lawler calls Hegseth national security 'hazard,' backs impeachment · 6 Sep 2026
- I've asked the Army to stop issuing the smaller helmets. If your head fits, you serve. The Secretary of War at the Pentagon — photo: U.S. Department of Defense, public domain · 5 Sep 2026
Elon Musk the richest man alive
The launch. Every room he enters is his product event and the people in it are early adopters. Everything is "concerning" until he looks into it, at which point it is fixed, by him, on the timeline. He believes the reply-guys are the public and the public is a demo. The thing he cannot see: that he is not the main character of the photograph he is in.
the tells concerning, looking into it, !!, this is actually insane, the woke mind virus, I'm going to fix it, 🤔, legacy media

Mike Johnson the Speaker of the House
Ned Flanders with a gavel. He is a Bible-believing Christian and he will tell you what the Lord wants the House to do this week, which is, by coincidence, what the president texted. He carries the binder like a hall pass. He installed the app that reports to his son; he told the press about it, sincerely. The thing he cannot see: that the flock is the one holding the leash.
the tells the Lord, my good friend, the American people, we're going to get this done, I'm a Bible-believing Christian, I've been very clear, we'll see
- Section 219 is in the defense bill because the Lord asked for it by number. I've been very clear: I read the markup devotionally. Over 50 Groups Urge Congress to Reject US-Israeli Military Integration Plan · 6 Sep 2026
JD Vance the vice president
The memoir, still narrating. Yale by way of Middletown and never the other direction; "look" begins every sentence he wishes were from a porch. He has a position on every family that isn't his and he holds it with his hands folded. The thing he cannot see: that the elegy was about him.
the tells look, the American people are tired of, my mom, where I grew up, normal people, let me be clear, the regime
- Look, I'm the second night. Where I grew up, the second night is the one that counts. Middletown plans its whole year around it. RNC unveils midterm convention speaking order headlined by Trump and Vance · 9 Sep 2026
Robert F. Kennedy Jr. the Secretary of Health
The man who read one study. He is not anti-anything, he has just looked into it, and what he found is that the agencies are corrupt and the answer is in a supplement. He speaks about his own body as an experiment he is proud of. The thing he cannot see: that "I'm just asking questions" is the answer.
the tells I'm not anti-vaccine, I've studied this, corrupt agencies, MAHA, the science is, we're going to find out, I'm just asking

Kristi Noem the Secretary of Homeland Security
The influencer who happens to run the department. Every operation is a photo with hair and makeup, every warning is a caption, and the ranch is always mentioned. She wrote the dog into her own book and was surprised. The thing she cannot see: that the camera is the operation.
the tells we will find you, I'm a rancher, law and order, mom, we're going to hunt you down, at the direction of the president
No balloon yet.
Howard Lutnick the Secretary of Commerce
The closer. Every question is an objection and every objection is a yes he hasn't heard yet. Tariffs are paid by someone else, the numbers are the biggest numbers, and your mother-in-law would understand if you explained it to her the way he just did. The thing he cannot see: that he is the customer.
the tells China pays, let me explain it to you, the numbers, your mother-in-law, this is the deal, trust me, we're going to make a fortune
No balloon yet.
Pam Bondi the Attorney General
The prosecutor who is the defense. Weaponization is the crime and she is the cure; the files are on her desk, she has said so, and her desk is very large. She announces investigations the way a weather anchor announces rain. The thing she cannot see: that "on my desk" is where things go to stay.
the tells weaponization, on my desk, the president has been very clear, we are looking at, the previous administration, rest assured

Marco Rubio the Secretary of State
The man who said all of it in 2016 and now says the opposite in the same suit. Every position is the president's, stated with the calm of someone who has already been through the other side of the argument and lost. The thing he cannot see: that the record has both halves.
the tells look, the president has been clear, we're not going to, that's not what this is about, I've said this before, the American people
- Look — the president has been clear that the cocaine stops at the border. I land in Bogota Tuesday to ask the plants to reconsider. Rubio to Push Colombia’s New Leader to Tackle Cocaine Trade · 8 Sep 2026
Stephen Miller the deputy chief of staff
The memo that learned to speak. Every sentence is an emergency, every noun is an invasion, and the tone is a man reading a court order to a dog. He is the most certain person in any building. The thing he cannot see: that he is the only one in the picture not smiling.
the tells invasion, the regime, the American people demand, this is a war, radical, unprecedented, illegal
No balloon yet.
Chuck Schumer the Senate minority leader
The strongly worded letter, in a suit. Every outrage gets a press conference, a chart, and a promise to fight, and then a vote. He believes the letter is the fight. The thing he cannot see: that the majority reads his letters for the schedule.
the tells I'm going to fight, this is outrageous, we sent a letter, the American people deserve, make no mistake, the Republican majority
- Eight weeks out, a pure toss-up, so I've drafted a very strong letter to November itself. Certified mail. If November signs, that's the ballgame. Senate 'pure toss-up' ahead of midterms: DDHQ · 9 Sep 2026
Gavin Newsom the governor of California
The podcast. Every position is a pivot with hair, delivered to the guest who disagrees, who he agrees with by the end. He is running for something the way weather is running for spring. The thing he cannot see: that the state is in the room too.
the tells look, I'll be candid, I'm not naive, let's have that conversation, respectfully, in California we
No balloon yet.
Zohran Mamdani the mayor of New York
The campaign that never stopped. Every meeting is a walking-tour video, every policy is a promise with a price tag that is somebody else's, and the influencers are in the group chat. The thing he cannot see: that governing is the part after the video ends.
the tells affordability, working people, we campaigned on, this city, the billionaire class, we're going to deliver
